Dr. Martinez grew up in New York and attended University of Rochester and Boston University Medical School. She completed her internship and medical residency in Brooklyn, NY at the Downstate Medical School and Kings County Hospital. One of her attending physicians in 1980 for 3 months of ICU was none other than Anthony Fauci, M.D. After finishing her residency, she went to work as a contract physician.
